Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday concluded his landmark two-day visit to Jordan and departed for Ethiopia on a State visit, marking the next leg of his diplomatic engagement in West Asia and Africa. In a special gesture reflecting the warmth of bilateral ties, Jordan’s Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II personally bid farewell to the Prime Minister at the airport in Amman.
Earlier in the day, the Crown Prince also drove Prime Minister Modi to the Jordan Museum, where Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Vice-Chair of the museum, gave them a special tour. The visit highlighted the deep civilisational connections between India and Jordan, underlining centuries-old cultural and historical links between the two nations.
During his stay, Prime Minister Modi addressed the India-Jordan Business Forum, where he outlined opportunities to expand trade, business and investment cooperation. King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II were present at the forum, underscoring the high-level support for strengthening economic engagement.
Prime Minister Modi also held extensive discussions with King Abdullah II at the Al Husseiniya Palace, proposing that bilateral trade be enhanced to USD 5 billion in the coming years. He called for collaboration between Jordan’s digital payment systems and India’s Unified Payments Interface, reflecting the growing emphasis on digital connectivity.
The visit marked 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan and saw the finalisation of several Memoranda of Understanding in areas including culture, renewable energy, water management, digital public infrastructure and heritage cooperation through the twinning of Petra and Ellora.
Following the conclusion of his Jordan engagements, Prime Minister Modi emplaned for Ethiopia at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The visit marks his first-ever trip to Ethiopia and highlights the growing strategic importance of India-Ethiopia relations within the broader Global South framework.
During the Ethiopia visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold comprehensive discussions with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on political engagement, development cooperation, trade, investment and people-to-people ties. He will also meet members of the Indian diaspora and address a Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, sharing India’s democratic journey and its vision for inclusive global growth.
