In his initial response to the Assembly election results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) achievement of securing a record third consecutive term in Haryana as a triumph for development-focused politics and effective governance. Following the Election Commission’s announcement of the BJP winning 47 seats in the 90-member Assembly and leading in one more, Modi expressed his gratitude to the people of Haryana and praised them for granting the party a clear majority once again.
Modi congratulated the party workers for their unwavering dedication, stating, “My heartiest congratulations to all my party workers who have worked tirelessly and with full dedication for this great victory! You have not only served the people of the state to the fullest but have also taken our agenda of development to them. It is because of this that the BJP has achieved this historic victory in Haryana.”
Defying exit poll predictions and successfully countering anti-incumbency sentiment, the BJP recorded its best performance in Haryana after being in power for a decade, increasing its seat count by eight from the last election. Meanwhile, the Congress party, which was forecasted to win around 55 seats according to several exit polls, managed to secure only 37 seats, a modest gain of six compared to its previous tally. The difference in vote shares was narrow, with the BJP at 39.94% and Congress at 39.09% as of 7 PM.
Regarding Jammu and Kashmir, Modi congratulated the National Conference while omitting its ally, Congress, which helped the coalition reach a majority. He noted that this year’s Assembly elections were significant as they were the first following the removal of Article 370 and Article 35(A), which had granted special status to the region. Modi highlighted the high voter turnout as a testament to the people’s faith in democracy and thanked everyone who supported the BJP, which won 29 seats, an increase of four since 2014.
The National Conference-Congress-Communist Party of India (Marxist) alliance won a total of 49 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, with the National Conference contributing the majority at 42 seats, while Congress secured just six and the CPM one.
