Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the growing partnership between India and the European Union, describing it as a natural and strategic alliance. He expressed optimism that a free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the EU could be finalized by the end of the year, marking a major step in economic collaboration.
Speaking at Hyderabad House alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, PM Modi emphasized that discussions had been meaningful and productive. He noted that both sides have directed their teams to work on an FTA that will benefit both regions and aim for its completion by year-end. He highlighted the numerous decisions taken to enhance cooperation between India and the EU across various sectors.
PM Modi welcomed von der Leyen and the European Commission delegation, underscoring the significance of their visit. He pointed out that this was the first time the European Commission had engaged so comprehensively with a single nation. He reiterated that the foundation of the India-EU relationship is built on mutual trust, democratic values, and a shared commitment to economic growth. Over the past two days, ministerial discussions covered trade, technology, investment, innovation, green energy, security, and workforce mobility.
A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to initiate a space dialogue, strengthening technological collaboration between India and the EU. PM Modi also announced plans for a Green Hydrogen Forum and an Offshore Wind Energy Business Summit to support sustainable energy initiatives. Additionally, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in emerging fields like semiconductors, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and 6G technology.
Security was another major topic, with India and the EU pledging to work together on cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and maritime security, reinforcing their mutual commitment to global stability.
PM Modi also emphasized the importance of connectivity, highlighting the India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a crucial driver of global trade and sustainable growth. He expressed confidence that IMEC would play a transformative role in international commerce and prosperity.
The discussions between PM Modi and President von der Leyen, held in both delegation-level and bilateral meetings, signaled a strengthened partnership between India and the EU, with a clear roadmap for future collaboration.
