On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei for a significant discussion aimed at deepening bilateral relations. During their extensive talks, the leaders explored avenues to strengthen trade, commercial connections, and cultural exchanges between their nations. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and his family extended a warm welcome to PM Modi at the Istana Nurul Iman, setting a positive tone for the visit.
PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm about the discussions on X, stating that the meeting covered a broad range of topics, including enhancing trade ties and people-to-people interactions. He emphasized the commitment to furthering bilateral relations between India and Brunei.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted Brunei’s importance as a partner in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and its vision for the Indo-Pacific. He noted that PM Modi’s visit, which marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei, aligns with the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Upon arrival in Brunei on Tuesday, PM Modi was given a ceremonial reception and expressed his appreciation to Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. During the visit, PM Modi also inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan. The building, featuring traditional motifs and lush landscaping, reflects a blend of Indian cultural heritage with modern design elements.
The Prime Minister had a heartfelt interaction with the Indian diaspora, including a memorable moment with a young girl who presented him with a painting of the Indian flag. He acknowledged the contributions of the Indian community, which plays a crucial role in strengthening the ties between India and Brunei. Currently, about 14,000 Indians reside in Brunei.
In addition to these events, PM Modi visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, where he was received by Brunei’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin, and Minister of Health, Dato Haji Mohammad Isham. Following his Brunei visit, PM Modi will travel to Singapore for a two-day visit from September 4-5.
