Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-nation diplomatic visit to Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman, aimed at deepening India’s strategic partnerships and expanding cooperation across political, economic and people-to-people domains.
In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said India shares long-standing civilisational ties as well as robust contemporary relations with all three countries. The visit reflects India’s continued focus on strengthening engagement across West Asia and Africa.
The first leg of the visit takes the Prime Minister to Jordan, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. During his stay in Amman, Modi will hold detailed discussions with King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II. He is also scheduled to interact with members of the Indian community, whose contributions have played a significant role in strengthening bilateral ties.
From Jordan, the Prime Minister will travel to Ethiopia at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. The visit is significant as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ethiopia since 2011. Addis Ababa, which hosts the headquarters of the African Union, holds particular importance for India, especially following the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s presidency in 2023.
In Ethiopia, Modi will hold talks with the country’s leadership and address a joint session of Parliament, sharing India’s democratic journey and highlighting the potential of the India-Ethiopia partnership in advancing the interests of the Global South. He will also engage with the Indian diaspora residing in the country.
The final leg of the tour will take the Prime Minister to Oman, marking his second visit to the country. India and Oman are commemorating 70 years of diplomatic relations this year. In Muscat, Modi will hold high-level talks with the Sultan of Oman, focusing on strengthening the Strategic Partnership and enhancing trade and economic cooperation.
The Prime Minister will also address members of the Indian diaspora in Oman, acknowledging their role in contributing to Oman’s development and in strengthening bilateral relations. The visit underscores India’s commitment to deepening ties with trusted partners across regions of strategic importance.
