Veteran journalist Mitali Mukherjee has been named the new director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. With more than two decades of experience covering political economy across TV, print, and digital media in India, Mukherjee is widely respected for her influential journalism and editorial leadership.
Before joining the Reuters Institute, Mukherjee served as the consulting business editor at The Wire and was widely recognised for her YouTube show, which explored pressing economic and political issues. She moved to Oxford to pursue her work at the institute, where she had been serving as acting director since October 2024.
Her appointment follows a competitive global selection process that concluded in March 2025. She takes over from Rasmus Nielsen.
Mukherjee plays a central role in running the institute’s journalist programmes. Under her interim leadership, the institute has expanded its fellowship programme with new sponsors and secured crucial funding for the Oxford Climate Journalism Network, advancing climate-focused media initiatives.
Her past accolades include being named a Chevening Fellow in 2020, a Raisina Young Fellow in 2019, and an Australia India Youth Dialogue Fellow in 2017. She was also nominated for the Red Ink Awards in 2020 for two of her business journalism pieces.
Reflecting on her new role, Mukherjee said, “In a time of unpredictability and shift across the world, we are, and will remain, international in our reach and impact.”
