Prof. Nikhil Gupta, a distinguished faculty member at NYU’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been appointed as an editorial board member for Scientific Data, a multidisciplinary journal under the Nature umbrella. In his new role, Gupta will oversee peer review processes and ensure submitted manuscripts meet the highest scientific standards.
As an open-access publication, Scientific Data emphasizes data-sharing to foster innovation and accelerate scientific breakthroughs. Gupta highlighted the growing demand for platforms like this, especially as artificial intelligence development increasingly relies on large datasets. “This role allows me to contribute to breaking down barriers to interdisciplinary research,” Gupta remarked, emphasizing the importance of the journal’s mission.
The journal adheres to the FAIR Principles—Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable—for managing research data. Editorial board members, recognized experts in their fields, evaluate datasets to ensure academic rigor and verifiability, enabling global researchers to reuse the information effectively.
Gupta, whose diverse research includes additive manufacturing and biomedical hydrogels, will focus on materials science submissions. He aims to uphold stringent scientific standards, furthering the journal’s commitment to quality.
Since joining NYU in 2004, Gupta has made significant contributions across departments, including Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Civil and Urban Engineering, and the Center for Cybersecurity. A Fellow of ASM International and the American Society for Composites, Gupta is also a Senior Member of IEEE and the National Academy of Inventors.
His leadership roles include chairing the Composite Materials Committee of TMS and serving as Membership Secretary for the American Society for Composites. Gupta’s editorial experience spans notable journals like Materials Science and Engineering A and Materials Processing and Characterization, showcasing his long-standing dedication to advancing scientific research.
