Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, has unveiled ambitious plans to establish the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) workforce, with India potentially emerging as the premier exporter of AI products and talent. Huang envisions India becoming a major hub for AI expertise and exports, stating, “India will produce and export more AI expertise than any other country. AI could also be its largest export.”
As part of its mission to lead in AI, Nvidia intends to upskill and reskill every engineer within the company. Huang emphasizes that AI won’t replace jobs; rather, individuals who harness AI effectively will excel. He emphasizes the importance of equipping engineers to be highly productive and efficient.
Nvidia is set to reskill over 600,000 employees of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, in AI, as part of a broader initiative spanning the entire ecosystem. Huang expresses a desire to collaborate with other IT service providers and Indian educational institutions to educate both professionals and students about artificial intelligence.
Currently employing around 2,200 people in India, Nvidia aims to more than double its workforce in the country in the coming years. The company actively invests in startups, partnering on AI projects with 15,000 startups worldwide, including those in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met with Mr. Huang to discuss India’s AI potential, highlighting India’s advancements in this field and the nation’s talented youth.
Nvidia, which first established operations in India in 2004, has since expanded to include engineering development centers in Gurugram, Hyderabad, Pune, and Bengaluru, with a workforce of about 3,800 employees across the nation. The company also collaborates with 320,000 developers in India through its developer program.
Nvidia reported impressive financial figures, with revenues of US$13.5 billion in the second quarter of the year, driven by the global AI boom. In the fiscal year 2022-23, the corporation achieved US$27 billion in sales and holds over 7,500 granted and pending patent applications worldwide. Nvidia is recognized as the “world’s engine for AI” and its AI technologies are integral to the services of tech giants like Alibaba, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Snap, Spotify, Tencent, and thousands of other companies.
