Nikki Haley, the former U.N. ambassador, shared a heartfelt tribute online on Sunday in memory of her father, who passed away on Father’s Day. In her post, Haley expressed profound grief over the loss of her father, whom she described as the wisest, kindest, and most decent man she had ever known. She highlighted the values he instilled in his children, emphasizing the importance of faith, hard work, and grace.
Accompanying her message was a poignant photograph capturing a moment of embrace between Haley and her father, Ajit Singh Randhawa. The picture was taken at an event in South Carolina, where Haley, a native of the state, had launched her presidential campaign in 2023. Despite suspending her run for the Republican nomination earlier this year, Haley remained a prominent figure in American politics, known for her proud identity as the daughter of Indian immigrants.
In her memoir “Can’t Is Not an Option,” Haley described growing up in a small, segregated town in South Carolina. She reflected on her father’s resilience in maintaining his Sikh identity, wearing a turban despite facing prejudice and ignorance. This steadfastness, she recalled, left a lasting impression on her, fueling a quiet determination in the face of adversity.
Ajit Singh Randhawa and his wife, both hailing from Sikh families in India, had embarked on a journey of their own—a path that led them to the United States, where Randhawa pursued a career in biology. Arriving with little more than $8 in his pocket, he eventually earned a doctorate and began teaching at Voorhees College in South Carolina in 1969. Haley fondly remembered her father as a tall and proud figure, whose presence in their community challenged and reshaped perceptions.
Throughout Haley’s political career, her father remained a steadfast supporter, even if preferring to stay in the background during her campaigns to avoid detracting from her efforts. Their close relationship was evident, from his discrete presence at her events to their shared front-row seat at her gubernatorial inauguration.
In her recent reflections on her father’s passing, Haley celebrated his role not only as a husband of 64 years and a cherished patriarch but also as a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. She expressed gratitude for the profound impact he had on her life and that of her siblings, acknowledging him as a blessing to their entire family.
While the cause of his death was not disclosed in her tribute, Haley’s words conveyed deep admiration and reverence for a man whose influence shaped her values, resilience, and unwavering commitment to public service.
