Ajit Singh Randhawa and his wife, both hailing from Sikh families in India, had embarked on a journey of their own—a path that led them to the United States, where Randhawa pursued a career in biology. Arriving with little more than $8 in his pocket, he eventually earned a doctorate and began teaching at Voorhees College in South Carolina in 1969. Haley fondly remembered her father as a tall and proud figure, whose presence in their community challenged and reshaped perceptions.
Throughout Haley’s political career, her father remained a steadfast supporter, even if preferring to stay in the background during her campaigns to avoid detracting from her efforts. Their close relationship was evident, from his discrete presence at her events to their shared front-row seat at her gubernatorial inauguration.
