On June 13, 2023, New York-based international non-profit organization Girl Rising announced Nidhi Shukla as its new president. Shukla, formerly the head of global programming in Delhi, India, will now be based in New York, working alongside CEO Christina Lowery. Together, they will drive the organization’s mission of using storytelling to transform how girls and their education are valued worldwide.
Having been part of Girl Rising since 2015, Shukla expressed her excitement about the organization’s unique approach of leveraging storytelling to break down gender barriers, foster understanding, forge connections, and cultivate empathy. With Girl Rising entering its second decade of impact, Shukla is eager to contribute to its continued success.
With an extensive background as a human rights lawyer, Shukla brings over two decades of experience in the social justice sector and a strong commitment to using storytelling as a tool for advocacy and empowering marginalized communities. She has previously collaborated with organizations such as Lawyers Collective, Heroes Project – Richard Gere Foundation, and Johns Hopkins University’s Centre for Communications Program.
As the new president, Shukla’s responsibilities will include expanding Girl Rising’s programs to advance girls’ rights to quality education and dismantle gender barriers. She will also work closely with a network of partners, supporters, and grassroots activists to incorporate new focus areas like climate justice and climate change action into the organization’s educational initiatives.
