In a landmark decision, schools across New York City will close on November 1 to observe Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. This will be the first instance of the city officially recognizing the holiday within its school calendar.
Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, expressed enthusiasm about the change. “This Diwali is momentous. For the first time, schools in New York City will shut down on November 1 for Diwali,” Chauhan noted.
Chauhan acknowledged the challenges of establishing this holiday in a school system that serves 1.1 million students, commending the commitment of community leaders and advocates who supported this cause. He credited New York City Mayor Eric Adams for implementing the closure, stating, “It wasn’t easy. Numerous community members and elected officials have worked on this for years, and now, thanks to Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, schools will observe Diwali as a holiday.”
The decision also alleviates conflicts for students who previously had to choose between attending school and participating in Diwali rituals. “Diwali is a multi-day celebration, and some students need time for prayers and temple visits during the festival,” explained Chauhan. He added that with this new holiday, students can enjoy Halloween night without the stress of returning to school the next day.
Chauhan expressed gratitude to Mayor Adams for this recognition, saying, “We’re deeply appreciative. Happy Diwali to all!”
The move comes after New York City’s official declaration in June to observe Diwali as a public school holiday. Diwali, celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists, marks one of the most significant festivals in these cultures.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted Diwali festivities at the White House on October 28, welcoming Indian-American guests from across the country. This marks their last Diwali celebration in office, with the White House sharing a message on X: “Happy Diwali from the White House! Together, let us demonstrate the strength found in the unity of light.”
