On June 8, 2023, the newly developed ‘Agni Prime’ ballistic missile underwent a successful test flight from an island near the coast of Odisha, as confirmed by officials. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the test from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island and achieved all of the set objectives.
This marked the first night launch before the missile’s induction, following three successful developmental trials. The launch demonstrated the system’s accuracy and reliability. To capture flight data along the entire trajectory, range instrumentation, including radar, telemetry, and electro-optical tracking systems, were installed at multiple locations, including two ships positioned down-range.
Senior officials from the DRDO and the Strategic Forces Command were present to witness the successful flight test. This achievement paves the way for the missile system to be incorporated into the armed forces.
