The National Turmeric Board has completed its first year of operations, playing a key role in supporting turmeric farmers and expanding India’s presence in the global turmeric market, according to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal.
Established to strengthen the entire turmeric value chain, the Board focuses on areas ranging from cultivation and scientific research to processing and international trade. Its initiatives have contributed to increased cultivation levels and created new opportunities for traders and exporters across the country.
India continues to be the world’s leading producer and exporter of turmeric, with more than 30 native varieties gaining domestic and international recognition, including several with Geographical Indication status. The Board has been working to improve productivity and quality standards while also promoting turmeric’s medicinal and general applications in overseas markets.
Since its inception, the Board has prioritized farmer-centric measures, better processing practices, improved logistics, and export promotion. These efforts aim to ensure that Indian turmeric remains competitive and in demand globally, while also delivering better returns to growers.
The initiatives are expected to benefit farmers across 20 states through improved infrastructure, stronger research support, and enhanced market access. At the same time, exporters are being encouraged to explore new international markets as global demand for turmeric rises.
With growing worldwide interest in health-focused products, turmeric’s importance in food, nutraceuticals, and related sectors continues to increase. The performance of the National Turmeric Board in its first year highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening agriculture and securing India’s position as a global leader in the spice economy.
