The announcement of Ms. Jaya Verma Sinha’s historic appointment as the inaugural female Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairwoman of the Railway Board was officially disclosed on August 31, 2023, by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. In this role, she succeeds Mr. Anil Kumar Lahoti, and her tenure will commence on September 1, 2023, extending until her retirement.
The elevation of Ms. Jaya Verma Sinha, who currently serves as Member (Operations & Business Development) within the Indian Railway Management Services (IRMS), to the esteemed position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board has received formal approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Ms. Sinha has been notably recognized for her contributions in the realm of railway operations and business development, particularly her insights into the intricate signalling systems, which have been highlighted during the railway’s media interactions. Her journey in the railway sector commenced in 1988 when she joined the Indian Railway Traffic Service. Throughout her career, she has held significant roles in various railways, including the Northern, South-East, and Eastern Railways. Additionally, Ms. Sinha enriched her experience by serving as a Railway Advisor at the High Commission of India in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for a span of four years. During her tenure in Bangladesh, she played a pivotal role in inaugurating the Maitree Express, a train service connecting Kolkata and Dhaka. Furthermore, Ms. Sinha has served as the Divisional Railway Manager for the Eastern Railway’s Sealdah Division.
Ms. Jaya Verma Sinha’s journey, rooted in her education at Allahabad University and initiated with her entry into the Indian Railway Traffic Service in 1988, has been marked by significant contributions and achievements across various railways and international postings, reflecting her dedication and expertise in the railway sector.
