During his address to the Lok Sabha on Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a firm and detailed defense of India’s military actions against Pakistan. He rebuffed claims by US President Donald Trump about intervening to mediate a ceasefire, asserting that India acted in its own strategic interest without foreign influence.
Modi revealed that on the night of May 9, US Vice President JD Vance reached out multiple times, warning of a potential Pakistani strike. The Prime Minister stated he didn’t take the calls immediately due to back-to-back meetings. When he finally responded, he told Vance that any provocation from Pakistan would invite a decisive and forceful retaliation. “We will respond with cannonballs if they fire bullets,” he told him. Modi made it clear in Parliament that no world leader had the authority to dictate India’s military decisions.
PM Modi detailed that India successfully intercepted and neutralized nearly 1,000 Pakistani drones and missiles during the operation. The Pakistani army was so overwhelmed by the Indian response that their DGMO requested a ceasefire, pleading with India to stop the offensive. The Prime Minister quoted messages circulating in Pakistan’s media expressing disbelief over the intensity of India’s strike.
In a historical reference, Modi accused former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of mishandling national interest by signing the Indus Waters Treaty, granting Pakistan control of 80% of river waters originating in India. He announced that following the Pahalgam attack, the government has suspended the treaty, calling it a long-overdue correction of Nehru’s “blunder.” He emphasized, “Blood and water cannot flow together.”
PM Modi also criticized the Congress party, questioning why senior leaders like Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari weren’t allowed to speak during the debate. Without naming them directly, he said prominent leaders were deliberately sidelined.
Taking a direct swipe at the Opposition, Modi accused them of constantly finding reasons to oppose any military action. Referring to reactions during past surgical and airstrikes, he said this time the critics have moved to asking “Why did you stop?”—calling such comments laughable and disrespectful to national interests. Modi concluded by stating the entire country stands united in pride for its armed forces.
