Prime Minister Narendra Modi may meet Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in early April as Dhaka has approached New Delhi to facilitate the meeting.
According to a report by ANI, Bangladesh has reached out to India, requesting a bilateral discussion between the two leaders on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit, which will be held in Bangkok from April 2-4. Foreign Affairs Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, Md Touhid Hossain, confirmed that a formal diplomatic request had been made to India for the meeting.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Yunus is also set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 28, adding significance to Bangladesh’s ongoing diplomatic engagements.
This is not the first time Dhaka has sought talks with India. In September last year, Bangladesh had requested a meeting between PM Modi and Yunus at the UN General Assembly in New York. However, sources had indicated that such a meeting was not part of Modi’s schedule at the time, and it did not take place. The latest request, however, has raised hopes for a possible discussion this time.
In a related development, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently held talks with Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain in February during the Indian Ocean Conference in Oman. Their discussion focused on strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation within the BIMSTEC framework.
