Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jordan has given fresh momentum to India-Jordan relations with the signing of five key Memoranda of Understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors. The agreements cover renewable energy, water resource management, cultural exchange, digital solutions and heritage cooperation through twinning between Petra and Ellora.
During high-level talks with King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Modi reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral engagement, including trade and investment, defence and security, renewable energy, fertilisers and agriculture, digital technologies, critical minerals, healthcare, education, tourism and people-to-people ties. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in areas of shared strategic interest.
Prime Minister Modi proposed enhancing bilateral trade to USD 5 billion over the next five years and encouraged collaboration between Jordan’s digital payment systems and India’s Unified Payments Interface. Fertiliser cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with Jordan remaining a vital supplier of phosphates and potash to India as companies on both sides explore further investment opportunities.
India is currently Jordan’s third-largest trading partner, with strong commercial integration reflected in long-term joint ventures and Indian-owned manufacturing units operating in Jordan. The Jordan India Fertiliser Company stands as a flagship partnership supplying phosphoric acid to India, while Indian garment manufacturers in Jordan’s industrial zones contribute significantly to exports under global trade frameworks.
Technology cooperation has also emerged as a key pillar of the relationship, highlighted by the India-Jordan Centre of Excellence in Information Technology in Amman. Funded by India, the centre supports advanced training and digital capacity building, reinforcing the growing technology partnership.
Marking 75 years of diplomatic relations, Prime Minister Modi’s first full bilateral visit to Jordan underscores India’s long-term commitment to deepening economic, technological and cultural ties with the West Asian nation.
