During Seychelles President Patrick Herminie’s state visit to India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a $175 million special economic package aimed at bolstering key sectors in the island nation. The package is designed to fund concrete initiatives in social housing, healthcare, defence, maritime security, e-mobility, and vocational training. Modi highlighted that the investment would create job opportunities and skill-building programs, particularly benefiting the youth of Seychelles.
Addressing a joint press conference, PM Modi emphasized that the development partnership between India and Seychelles has always focused on the priorities and needs of the island nation. “Today, we are unveiling a $175 million economic package to support projects in social housing, health, defence, maritime security, and vocational training. This initiative will foster employment and skill development opportunities for the people of Seychelles, especially the younger generation,” Modi said.
The announcement coincides with the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, a milestone that Modi described as inspiring for both countries to reach new heights in their bilateral partnership. He underlined the strong historical, cultural, and economic ties connecting the two nations, remarking that India and Seychelles share not just geography, but a deep-rooted trust and vision for the future.
Highlighting people-to-people connections, the Prime Minister praised the Indian community in Seychelles for their contributions to the nation’s social and economic life and their role in strengthening friendship across generations. Modi also stressed that Seychelles forms an integral part of India’s MAHASAGAR vision, with cooperation extending across land, sea, and maritime security initiatives.
During the visit, President Herminie paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, a gesture reflecting the enduring principles guiding India-Seychelles relations. This marks President Herminie’s first visit to India since assuming office in October 2025, including engagements in Chennai and Mumbai. The leaders also held a bilateral meeting at Hyderabad House, further reinforcing strategic cooperation and shared developmental goals.
The $175 million package demonstrates India’s commitment to supporting Seychelles in sustainable development, infrastructure growth, and enhancing employment opportunities, solidifying a partnership built on trust, shared history, and a mutual vision for prosperity.
