On August 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Wayanad to conduct an aerial assessment of the destruction that claimed over 300 lives. The local administration reports that 138 individuals remain missing following the recent severe landslides in this northern Kerala district. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with 1,026 personnel from various forces, including the army and navy, supported by over 500 volunteers and heavy machinery, focusing on the Chooralmala and Mundakkai regions.
The Kerala government plans to release a detailed list of the missing persons soon as part of the ongoing response.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has urged the government to classify the Wayanad disaster as a national calamity. During a session, Gandhi emphasized the need for increased compensation for those affected, citing his own observations of the extensive damage and loss. He noted that many families have been entirely wiped out, leaving only a few survivors. Gandhi anticipates that the death toll, currently over 200, could rise above 400 as more information becomes available.
