Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, shortly after Putin’s high-profile meeting with former US President Donald Trump in Alaska. The conversation between Moscow and New Delhi came as global attention turned to possible breakthroughs in efforts to end the ongoing Ukraine war.
Taking to X, PM Modi thanked President Putin for reaching out and for sharing details of his talks with Trump. “Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” Modi posted.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi reiterated India’s firm position that the war, which has continued since February 2022, should be resolved through peaceful dialogue and negotiations. The statement underlined India’s readiness to extend its support to any effort aimed at securing peace.
Just two days earlier, Putin described his Alaska summit with Trump as both “timely” and “very useful.” He said the talks provided an opportunity to carefully restate Russia’s position on the Ukraine conflict, adding that the discussion was candid, substantive, and moved both sides closer to potential decisions. Putin emphasized that such direct negotiations at this level had not taken place in a long time.
Meanwhile, in Washington, preparations are underway for a significant meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Trump. This round of talks will carry additional weight, as Zelenskyy will be joined by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron. The gathering highlights Europe’s renewed backing for Ukraine, especially after being excluded from the Alaska summit.
Modi’s call with Putin underscores India’s ongoing diplomatic balancing act — maintaining strategic relations with Russia while consistently advocating for dialogue, restraint, and a negotiated settlement to the Ukraine crisis. As global leaders intensify efforts to find a solution, India continues to project itself as a voice of moderation and peace in the international arena.
