Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a productive conversation following PM Modi’s successful visit to the United States. The discussion reaffirmed India’s strategic autonomy and non-zero-sum approach to global affairs in a changing world.
The two leaders reviewed the progress in their bilateral cooperation and exchanged perspectives on regional and global issues of mutual interest, as mentioned in a press statement by the Press Information Bureau.
During the conversation, President Putin updated Prime Minister Modi on recent developments in Russia, including the situation in Ukraine. PM Modi reiterated his stance on promoting dialogue and diplomacy to address the Ukrainian crisis.
According to the Kremlin’s readout, the telephonic exchange covered various topics. Prime Minister Modi expressed understanding and support for Russia’s actions in safeguarding law and order and ensuring stability in response to an attempted uprising by the private military company Wagner.
Additionally, both leaders discussed the importance of further advancing major joint projects across different sectors, celebrating the substantial growth in bilateral trade.
Emphasizing their commitment to strengthening the privileged strategic partnership, they also highlighted interactions within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the Group of Twenty (G20), where India holds the chairmanship, and the BRICS format.
PM Modi also briefed President Putin about his recent international engagements, including his visit to Washington during the conversation.
