Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the enduring importance of love, harmony, and brotherhood during the Christmas celebrations hosted by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). He encouraged everyone to embrace these core values, which are intrinsic to the teachings of the Lord Christ, as a way to strengthen society.
Addressing attendees at the CBCI headquarters, Modi expressed his sorrow over ongoing violence and social disruptions across the globe. He stressed the urgency of adopting a human-centered perspective to tackle pressing global issues effectively. Reflecting on past tragedies, such as the Christmas market attack in Germany and the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka, the Prime Minister highlighted the critical need for unified global efforts to combat such challenges.
In a historic first, Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to participate in a CBCI event. Recalling India’s commitment to humanitarian missions, he shared the story of Father Alexis Prem Kumar, who was rescued from captivity in Afghanistan a decade ago. Modi described these missions not as mere diplomatic exercises but as deeply emotional endeavors to reunite families.
The Prime Minister also reflected on India’s proactive role during the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing how the country provided medicines to over 150 nations and supplied vaccines globally, demonstrating its commitment to collective welfare. He contrasted this with nations that, despite advocating for human rights, were hesitant to assist poorer countries.
Modi expressed optimism about India’s future, fueled by the confidence and potential of its youth, and reiterated his vision of a “Viksit Bharat.” He also congratulated His Eminence George Koovakad for being appointed a Cardinal by Pope Francis, describing it as a proud moment for India.
Founded in 1944, the CBCI continues to foster unity and service within the Catholic community, working closely with people across India to promote social harmony.
