Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s growing global influence in culture, arts, music, and festivals, noting that traditional practices such as Yoga and Ayurveda are fostering healthier lifestyles worldwide. He added that India is contributing innovative solutions to pressing global challenges.
Addressing the historic Somnath Temple, Modi reflected on past aggressors, calling them “dust in the wind” and highlighting that their legacies are now mere footnotes in history. In contrast, the Somnath Temple shines as a symbol of enduring hope and resilience, demonstrating that faith and conviction can overcome temporary destruction caused by hate and fanaticism.
Modi pointed out that if the Somnath Temple, repeatedly attacked over centuries—including by Mahmud Ghazni in 1024 AD—could rise again and again, India too could reclaim its historical grandeur. He underlined that the blessings of Shree Somnath Mahadev inspire the nation to pursue the vision of a “Viksit Bharat,” where ancient wisdom guides actions for the benefit of the world.
The Prime Minister recounted Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s pivotal role in rebuilding the Somnath Temple after India gained independence. Deeply moved by a visit during Diwali in 1947, Patel committed to restoring the temple, a vision that culminated in a grand reopening on May 11, 1951, in the presence of President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Though Patel did not live to witness the opening, Modi emphasized that the fulfilment of his dream remains a testament to India’s resilience.
Modi also noted that the then Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, had reservations about government officials attending the reopening ceremony, fearing it would create a negative impression. Despite this, Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s firm support ensured the temple’s inauguration was celebrated, preserving an enduring legacy that continues to inspire national pride and unity.
The Prime Minister concluded that the Somnath Temple serves as a powerful reminder that while destruction may strike momentarily, India’s cultural and civilizational spirit endures, lighting the way toward a prosperous and globally respected nation.
