Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his 10 years of leadership, has significantly altered India’s global image and established himself as a prominent global leader, according to an eminent Indian-American community leader. Dr. Bindukumar Kansupada, a cardiologist from Philadelphia, stated in an interview with PTI that Modi has been instrumental in changing how Indians are perceived worldwide. Dr. Kansupada believes that Modi is reviving Indian pride, culture, and ancient knowledge such as yoga, mindfulness, and Ayurveda. Dr. Kansupada attended the two-day annual summit Desis Decides of Indian-American Impact, where Vice President Kamala Harris also spoke. An alumnus of IIT, he serves on the Board of Directors of WHEELS Global Foundation. Reflecting on the changes under Modi’s leadership, Dr. Kansupada noted the significant expansion in education. When he attended medical school, Mumbai had only four medical schools, but now India boasts over 700 medical schools, with each district having one. Similarly, the number of IITs has grown from five in 1970 to 23. He emphasized the enormous growth and confidence among Indian youth, the development of religious tourism, the increase in airports, and the overall improvement in the happiness index. According to him, people are becoming more self-sufficient and proud to be Indians. Dr. Kansupada also mentioned that he would not be surprised if the younger generation of Indian-Americans needs to visit India for business development and community affairs, as the country has become a center of excellence. Responding to a question, he highlighted that Modi has instilled a sense of pride among the Indian populace. He shared that many middle-class Indians, including his friends in Mumbai, admire Modi and love India. Expressing his belief in Modi’s leadership, Dr. Kansupada stated that if more people participate in the upcoming election phases, Modi is likely to win. He views Modi as a leader for all populations—Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Tribal people—and believes he represents all facets of India and has the potential to unite the country.
