The Narendra Modi government has prioritized developing infrastructure and enhancing tourism in the Union Territories of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated during a meeting of the Island Development Agency (IDA) on Friday. According to an official release, the central government is also focusing on preserving the culture and heritage of these islands while accelerating development projects.
Shah reviewed ongoing development initiatives in the islands and emphasized their importance despite their geographical distance from Delhi, stating, “Even though these islands are far from Delhi, they are close to our hearts.”
He stressed the need for a collaborative approach among central ministries to enhance infrastructure and promote tourism, trade, and other vital sectors. Shah issued directives to address pending issues and speed up project completions.
A significant focus was placed on renewable energy, with Shah highlighting the importance of achieving 100% renewable energy generation in the islands. He directed the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to implement the ‘PM Surya Ghar’ scheme by equipping all households in these regions with solar panels. The integration of solar and wind energy is expected to transform energy sustainability in the islands.
The meeting also featured detailed presentations from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration, and the Lakshadweep administration. Development plans included improvements in digital connectivity, air transport, and port infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by notable officials, including Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Admiral (Retd.) D.K. Joshi, Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Patel, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and secretaries from various ministries. The collaborative efforts aim to advance tourism, connectivity, and renewable energy initiatives in these picturesque yet strategically significant territories.
