Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended his congratulations to Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus upon his appointment as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. Modi expressed hope for the safety and protection of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi emphasized the importance of ensuring security for all minority groups in the country. He also reaffirmed India’s commitment to working with Bangladesh to achieve shared goals of peace, security, and development.
Muhammad Yunus, 84, was sworn in as the head of the interim government following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who left office in response to widespread protests against her government. President Mohammed Shahabuddin officiated the swearing-in ceremony at the Bangabhaban presidential palace.
In his inaugural address, Yunus stressed the urgency of restoring law and order in the country, which had been marred by weeks of violence resulting in over 450 deaths. He called on citizens to protect one another, especially vulnerable minority groups, and urged the nation to trust in his leadership to bring stability.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina, who has relocated to India following her resignation, is staying in Delhi under tight security. Speculations about her seeking asylum in the United States or the United Kingdom have been dismissed as rumors by her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy. The Ministry of External Affairs has stated that any decision regarding Hasina’s future plans will be up to her.
