In an exciting turn of events at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, the USA Cricket team has carved its name in history by reaching the Super 8 stage for the first time ever. This achievement has sparked widespread enthusiasm among Americans, rallying support for their national team.
Major League Cricket, a US-based T20 league, extended its congratulations to the national team for this historic milestone. The league has several players in Team USA, including Ali Khan, Nitish Kumar, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Steven Taylor, Nosthush Kenjige, Monank Patel, Shayan Jahangir, Corey Anderson, Harmeet Singh, Milind Kumar, Andries Gous, Saurabh Netravalkar, and Yasir Mohammad.
Team USA commenced their campaign with a decisive victory over Canada in the opening game. They then secured a dramatic win against Pakistan in a super-over, which helped them finish second in Group A. Their progress was further aided by the abandonment of their game against Ireland due to rain.
In the Super 8 stage, USA is set to compete against South Africa, West Indies, and England in Group 2. Vijay Srinivasan, Chief Executive of Major League Cricket, praised the team’s advancement as an incredible achievement, especially considering it is their first-ever World Cup appearance.
“Congratulations to Team USA for delivering three thrilling matches against the world’s best teams and earning a spot in the Super 8. This is a historic moment for the sport, particularly for our Major League Cricket players representing the USA. We hope this inspires young boys and girls across the country to take up cricket and encourages fans to attend MLC games or tune into broadcasts,” said Srinivasan, as quoted by the MLC release.
Srinivasan also highlighted that USA’s advancement to the Super 8 guarantees their automatic qualification for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, providing a robust platform for Major League Cricket’s continued growth.
MLC’s six teams—Los Angeles Knight Riders, MI New York, San Francisco Unicorns, Seattle Orcas, Texas Super Kings, and Washington Freedom—feature top international and domestic players gearing up to represent their countries in the World Cup.
“MLC has transformed the cricket scene in the USA, bringing the sport to unprecedented heights. The inaugural 2023 season was a tremendous success, with sold-out matches and millions of viewers worldwide. This momentum sets the stage for the upcoming T20 World Cup and MLC’s second season, starting July 5,” added the release.
