Indian American Minita Sanghvi clinched the Democratic nomination for New York’s 44th State Senate district, boosted by key endorsements from the Saratoga County Democratic Committee and Schenectady County Democratic Committee.
Saratoga County Democratic Committee Chairwoman Martha Devaney hailed Sanghvi as a dedicated advocate and problem solver, citing her diverse background as a parent, educator, and public servant as evidence of her ability to deliver bipartisan results. Devaney expressed confidence in Sanghvi’s leadership qualities, deeming her a fitting choice for the 44th State Senate district.
Frank Salamone, Chair of the Schenectady County Democratic Committee, echoed these sentiments, praising Sanghvi’s fiscal stewardship as Saratoga Springs Commissioner of Finance. Salamone highlighted city improvements under Sanghvi’s tenure and endorsed her commitment to infrastructure and economic development, endorsing her candidacy for state senator.
The 44th State Senate district, currently represented by Republican Jim Tedisco, has seen a shift in political dynamics, with a growing number of registered Democrats indicating changing demographics. Sanghvi’s candidacy emphasizes community needs over partisanship, leveraging her collaborative leadership and achievements in fiscal responsibility.
Sanghvi, hailing from India, moved to the US in 2001, equipped with qualifications in accounting and an MBA. Her tenure as Saratoga Springs Finance Commissioner since 2021 underscores her commitment to public service, fiscal prudence, and residents’ well-being.
Sanghvi’s potential election would mark historic milestones as the first openly gay woman and woman of color to represent the district, and the first openly gay woman in the New York Senate. She pledges to champion women’s healthcare, LGBTQ rights, and equal opportunities for all residents.
Her opponent, incumbent Jim Tedisco, boasts a four-decade political career in Albany.
