On July 9, the Ministry of Education’s Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L) released the combined report for 2020-21 & 2021-22 of the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D). This index evaluates the performance of the school education system at the district level by providing a comprehensive analysis.
India’s education system is one of the world’s largest, comprising approximately 1.49 million schools, 9.5 million teachers, and nearly 265 million students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. DoSE&L introduced the Performance Grading Index (PGI) for states and published reports covering the reference years from 2017-18 to 2020-21.
Building upon the success of the state-level PGI, the 83-indicator-based PGI for Districts (PGI-D) has been developed to grade the performance of all districts in the field of school education. Districts enter their data through an online portal. The PGI-D aims to assist state education departments in identifying gaps at the district level and enhancing performance in a decentralized manner.
The PGI-D report highlights the specific areas in which a district needs improvement. Reports have been released for the years 2018-19 and 2019-20, and the current report combines data for 2020-21 & 2021-22.
The PGI-D framework consists of a total weightage of 600 points across 83 indicators, which are categorized into six areas: Outcomes, Effective Classroom Transaction, Infrastructure Facilities & Student’s Entitlements, School Safety & Child Protection, Digital Learning, and Governance Process.
