Microsoft Corp. is set to invest $3 billion in India, aiming to strengthen the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and expand its Azure cloud-computing business, as confirmed by CEO Satya Nadella on January 7, 2025. This investment marks the company’s largest expansion in India to date.
Nadella expressed excitement about this significant investment, stating, “We are thrilled to announce our largest expansion ever in India, with an additional $3 billion to enhance our Azure cloud capacity.” He also pointed out that Microsoft is focusing heavily on regional expansion within India.
The tech giant has ambitious plans to help build India’s AI expertise, with a goal to train 10 million people in AI skills by 2030. This training initiative aims to equip the Indian workforce with the tools and knowledge to capitalize on AI opportunities.
This announcement came shortly after Nadella’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed various technology and AI-related topics. Following the meeting, Nadella shared his gratitude on social media, emphasizing Microsoft’s commitment to helping make India an AI-first nation. He also expressed enthusiasm about their collaboration, aiming to ensure that all Indians benefit from the AI shift.
In addition to meeting the Prime Minister, Nadella had already engaged with Telangana Chief Minister K. Revanth Reddy in December 2024. In Hyderabad, they discussed Microsoft’s ongoing investments in the state and the potential for future technology collaborations. Microsoft has a well-established presence in Hyderabad, being one of the first major tech companies to establish operations in this rapidly developing tech hub.
