Mauritius Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam attended a significant spiritual event at the Sri Brahmrishi Ashram in Tirupati on Monday as part of his official visit to India. Siddhguru Sideswar Bramedswi Gurudev Swami welcomed the prime minister, lauding his humility and leadership. In response, Dr. Ramgoolam expressed the importance of his visit and highlighted his spiritual connection with the Ashram’s spiritual leader. Later in the evening, he visited the Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala, where he was warmly received by TTD officials at the Padmavati Guest House. Accompanied by his wife, the prime minister participated in darshan of Lord Venkateswara, with a reception attended by minister Ramanarayana Reddy, TTD Chairman B R Naidu, TTD executive officer Anil Singhal, and other dignitaries.
Arriving in India on September 9, Dr. Ramgoolam met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi on September 11. During the meeting, India unveiled a USD 680 million special economic package for Mauritius and finalized seven agreements to enhance bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including maritime security. Prime Minister Modi emphasised that maintaining a free and secure Indian Ocean is a shared priority for both nations.
Dr. Ramgoolam’s current visit, concluding on September 16, marks his first overseas bilateral trip during this term. His prior visit in May 2014 was notable as he was the only non-SAARC leader invited to the swearing-in ceremony of India’s prime minister and council of ministers.
India and Mauritius share a long-standing, close relationship, deeply rooted in shared history, culture, and people-to-people connections. As a crucial maritime neighbour in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius plays an important role in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR—mutual and holistic advancement for security and growth across the region—and aligns with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy. The visit is expected to further strengthen strategic ties following Prime Minister Modi’s trip to Mauritius in March 2025, reinforcing enduring bonds between the two nations in diplomacy, security, and economic collaboration.
