Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on November 19, 2025, that the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana has crossed a major milestone, with deposits now exceeding US$36.72 billion. Launched a decade ago to secure the future of girls through targeted savings, the program has already opened more than four crore accounts nationwide. Modi shared these achievements while speaking at the birth centenary celebration of Sri Satya Sai Baba, emphasizing that the scheme continues to provide one of the most attractive interest rates—8.2 percent—among savings plans focused on the education and welfare of daughters.
Highlighting the enormous response to the initiative, the Prime Minister noted that the growing volume of deposits reflects increasing awareness about financial planning for girls and expanding participation in formal banking systems. He stated that the scheme has not only empowered families to invest in their daughters’ futures but has also strengthened the broader goal of women’s financial security across India. Modi also honored Sri Satya Sai Baba’s enduring spiritual legacy, expressing that his message of service and compassion continues to guide millions around the world.
Addressing livestock welfare, the Prime Minister stressed the cultural and economic importance of cows in Indian families, describing them as symbols of prosperity, nurturing, and compassion. He recalled previous efforts under the National Gokul Mission, particularly in Varanasi, where more than 480 cows were distributed to local households. He noted that a traditional practice—where families gifted the first calf to another household—helped increase the cattle population in the region to more than 1,700.
Modi added that similar livestock-focused initiatives are positively influencing rural communities across India as well as in international regions where such cultural values are appreciated. These programs, he said, contribute significantly to strengthening rural economies by providing families with better nutrition, sustainable income opportunities, and deeper connections to traditions centered on care and environmental harmony.
He emphasized that promoting cow protection and sustainable livestock development reinforces India’s commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage while improving the lives of rural citizens. By intertwining welfare programs with long-standing values, the government aims to support communities in building stability, resilience, and long-term growth.
