Around 15,000 people gathered at Lake Papaianni Park in Edison, New Jersey, on Saturday, October 5, 2024, for the 26th Dushahra Festival organized by Indo-American Festivals, Inc. (IAF). Co-Chair Raj Mittal remarked that the favorable weather contributed to one of the largest turnouts in recent years. Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed the vibrant festival atmosphere, with many exploring vendor stalls and indulging in a variety of delicious Indian food.
The highlight of the festival was the Ramleela performance, which attracted a large crowd. The park, located conveniently at 100 Municipal Boulevard, provided ample seating and shaded areas for families to relax. However, by evening, many families with young children and seniors left before the Ravan Dahan ceremony to avoid the anticipated rush. Despite this, nearly 8,000 spectators remained to witness the burning of the 25-foot effigy of Ravan, a central ritual symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
Middlesex County played a key role in making the event possible, providing permits and safety measures, including deploying fire engines and ambulances. IAF expressed gratitude to the county for its support. In addition to the traditional Ravan Dahan, the festival featured a 15-foot statue of Hanuman and a series of cultural performances, including songs, dances, and skits curated by Pratibha Nichakawade.
Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed live music, a Meena Bazaar with over 150 vendors offering Indian crafts and jewelry, and various activities for all ages. The festival concluded with the ceremonial burning of the Ravan effigy, leaving attendees with a sense of joy and fulfillment as the day wrapped up successfully.
