Manoj Mohanan, recently appointed as interim dean of Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy, expressed his commitment to supporting colleagues and enhancing the school’s community and resources. A faculty member since 2011 and previously Sanford’s senior associate dean for faculty and research, Mohanan is an applied microeconomist specializing in health and development economics, blending his background in medicine and public health. His research focuses on healthcare provider behavior and improving quality of care in real-world settings, including examining the long-term mental health effects of COVID-19 and its impact on vulnerable households in India.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Mohanan has led initiatives such as the Sanford Undergraduate Task Force and collaborated on projects enhancing student engagement with U.S. policymakers through immersive learning experiences in Washington, D.C. His early career aspirations as an Air Force pilot shifted towards medicine and later into health policy and economics, driven by a passion for research and community impact.
Mohanan’s dedication to his work and its potential for broader influence has been recognized internationally, including being named one of Apolitical’s Top 100 most influential academics in government in 2022. His research contributions span prestigious journals, and he holds editorial and advisory roles, including serving on the NIH’s Study Section on Social Science and Population.
