The Ministry of External Affairs announced that French President Emmanuel Macron will be the Chief Guest at India’s 75th Republic Day celebrations, filling the void left by the unavailability of US President Joe Biden. This choice reflects the strategic and diplomatic imperatives guiding New Delhi’s decision, weaving together business, global geopolitics, and bilateral engagement. Macron’s visit marks the sixth occasion of a French leader being the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations.
The decision to invite Macron was influenced by the strong convergence between India and France on various regional and global issues. The two countries are commemorating the 25th anniversary of their Strategic Partnership this year. Following the announcement, it became evident that Macron’s visit was secured swiftly after the unavailability of US President Biden. The invitation to Macron not only signifies the depth of the bilateral relationship but also reinforces the close and friendly ties between India and France over 75 years, dating back to the establishment of diplomatic relations in June 1948.
India and France elevated their diplomatic relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 1998, and this partnership has been instrumental in the comprehensive growth of their relationship. Key pillars of this partnership include cooperation in defense and security, space, and civil nuclear matters. The collaboration has expanded to new areas, such as maritime security, digitalization, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, climate change, renewables, and sustainable growth.
Both countries share a high degree of convergence on various regional and global issues. France has consistently supported India’s aspirations for a permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council and reforms of the United Nations. The bilateral support extends to international forums, with France playing a crucial role in India’s accession to various international regimes.
President Macron and PM Modi have engaged regularly, with meetings on the sidelines of international summits. Their interactions underscore the strength of the bilateral relationship. The upcoming Republic Day celebrations will further solidify the ties between India and France, highlighting the importance of their Strategic Partnership.
