Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva highlighted India’s historic contributions to computing and praised the India AI Impact Summit 2026 during his visit to New Delhi. Speaking alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam, Lula emphasized that the digital era has returned to its origins, noting that Indian mathematicians invented the binary system over 2,000 years ago, which laid the foundation for modern computing.
The Brazilian leader remarked that the summit comes at a critical juncture for global societies. “We are navigating a crossroads,” he stated, pointing out that the rapid rise of the Fourth Industrial Revolution coincides with a decline in multilateral cooperation. He stressed the importance of global governance in Artificial Intelligence, framing it as a strategic necessity for the modern world.
President Lula also reflected on the dual nature of technological innovation. Citing examples like aviation, nuclear power, genetic engineering, and the space race, he highlighted how transformative technologies can either enhance collective well-being or exacerbate inequalities. He noted that algorithms, beyond being mathematical constructs, play a role in shaping power dynamics and warned that without collective action, AI could deepen existing societal disparities.
During his visit, Lula met Google CEO Sundar Pichai to discuss Brazil’s digital ambitions. The discussions included Google’s investments in the country, the opening of an engineering centre in São Paulo, partnerships in public infrastructure, and Brazil’s AI regulatory framework. They also explored measures to protect creative industries and address AI risks, particularly for women and girls.
The Brazilian President received a traditional Indian welcome upon arrival in Delhi, emphasizing his commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. The visit, which runs from February 18-22, includes participation in the AI Summit and bilateral discussions with PM Modi, aiming to expand strategic, economic, and technological ties.
Highlighting the growing commercial relationship, President Lula noted that bilateral trade between Brazil and India surpassed US$ 15 million in 2025. He also mentioned a high-level business delegation accompanying him to further boost commercial and technological cooperation between the two nations.
