Sergei Lavrov is expected to visit India in May to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, according to Russian officials.
The visit, scheduled for May 14–15, will be part of the BRICS ministerial discussions that will help shape the agenda and final documents for the upcoming summit under India’s presidency. The information was shared by Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, as reported by TASS.
On the sidelines of the BRICS meeting, Lavrov is also expected to hold bilateral talks with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and other Indian officials to further strengthen diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
India currently holds the BRICS chairmanship for 2026, guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The approach reflects a people-centric vision articulated by Narendra Modi during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.
Earlier, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening ties with Russia, highlighting the importance of cooperation in a rapidly evolving multipolar world. He emphasised that platforms such as BRICS, the SCO, G20, and the United Nations remain crucial for addressing global challenges through inclusive and balanced frameworks.
Originally formed as BRIC in 2006, the grouping expanded to BRICS with the inclusion of South Africa in 2010. In recent years, the bloc has further expanded, with countries including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indonesia joining as full members, reflecting its growing global influence.
Lavrov’s upcoming visit is expected to reinforce India-Russia relations while contributing to broader discussions on global governance, economic cooperation, and geopolitical stability under the BRICS framework.
