Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India, Mahishini Colonne, on Tuesday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and lauded India’s extensive support to Sri Lanka during the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
Describing PM Modi as “an important voice of the Global South” and a “highly respected leader,” Colonne highlighted India’s swift and multidimensional assistance during the crisis. Speaking to IANS, she said PM Modi is regarded in Sri Lanka as a dear friend who has consistently stood by the island nation during difficult times.
Recalling India’s past support, the High Commissioner noted that PM Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka within weeks of the Easter Sunday terror attacks in 2019 played a crucial role in restoring tourism and boosting the economy.
On India’s response to Cyclone Ditwah, Colonne said assistance began within hours of the cyclone’s impact. India deployed helicopters, sent relief materials, and dispatched medical teams, making its support comprehensive and timely. She added that India continues to support Sri Lanka in the rebuilding and recovery phase.
“Operation Sagar Bandhu commenced while the cyclone was still in force,” she said, adding that emergency funding has been released by the Sri Lankan government and affected people are currently being supported in relief camps.
Colonne emphasized that India has emerged as a trusted and consistent partner for Sri Lanka, stating that the people of Sri Lanka view India as a nation that stands by them in times of need.
She also highlighted the strong trade relationship between the two countries, noting that India is Sri Lanka’s largest trading partner. While recalling the India–Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement signed in 1998, she expressed hope that discussions to upgrade the agreement would begin soon, further strengthening bilateral economic ties.
