Earlier this year, both Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and Jab We Met (2007) returned to cinemas during Valentine’s Day week. Last year, on Amitabh Bachchan’s 80th birthday, several of his iconic films were re-released in theaters, receiving a remarkable response despite their availability on streaming platforms. Now, Koi Mil Gaya (2003) is aiming for a similar feat, set to hit the big screen again on August 4, as part of its 20-year celebration.
The report from Hindustan Times indicates that this limited re-release will span 30 cities, intending to capture the magic of the Hrithik Roshan-Preity Zinta starrer. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, the film originally released on August 8, 2003, across 450 screens. While the re-release will begin conservatively, the number of prints could be expanded based on audience demand, similar to the approach taken with Jab We Met’s re-release earlier this year.
Koi Mil Gaya, helmed by Rakesh Roshan, follows the story of Rohit (Hrithik Roshan), a mentally challenged child who falls for Nisha (Preity Zinta). The narrative also involves an endearing alien named Jadoo, whose powers transfer to Rohit and later to his son Krrish (Hrithik Roshan), the focus of the film’s sequels. Krrish (2006) delves into Krrish’s love story and his conflict with the sinister Dr. Siddhant Arya (Naseeruddin Shah). Krrish 3 (2013) continues with Krrish battling a larger evil, Kaal (Vivek Oberoi).
Rakesh Roshan has plans for Krrish 4, with production expected to commence in 2024. In an interview, he highlighted the challenges of creating superhero movies with limited budgets in comparison to global counterparts. Roshan acknowledged the necessity for strong content and innovative ideas to compete. He also recognized the global reach of Hollywood films compared to the more regional impact of Indian cinema, expressing optimism for the resurgence of cinema attendance.
