Vice President Kamala Harris is making a notable stop in Ripon, Wisconsin, the birthplace of the Republican Party, as part of her presidential campaign. On Thursday, she will host an event in this symbolic town, joined by former GOP Representative Liz Cheney, who endorsed her candidacy last month. The event will take place at the historic Little White Schoolhouse, where the Republican Party was founded in 1854.
Harris and Cheney will use the occasion to discuss the history of the GOP and make a direct appeal to Republicans and independents who are disillusioned with her opponent, former President Donald Trump. At a previous rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, Harris emphasized her bipartisan appeal, stating, “I will always put country above party, and I will be a president for all Americans,” noting that over 200 prominent Republicans have endorsed her campaign.
Liz Cheney, along with her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has long held conservative values but has become a vocal critic of Trump, especially in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol attack. Cheney, who voted to impeach Trump and played a key role on the House committee investigating the incident, lost her 2022 primary to a Trump-backed candidate. Both Liz and Dick Cheney have expressed their belief that Trump poses a grave danger to American democracy. Dick Cheney recently stated that Trump “can never be trusted with power again,” pointing to his actions following the 2020 election, where he attempted to overturn the results using falsehoods and violence.
