On Thursday, India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar conveyed sincere thanks to South Korea for its unwavering support following the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
In a phone call with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Taeyul, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of global unity in the fight against terrorism. He shared on X, “I had a conversation with Foreign Minister Cho Taeyul this morning. I expressed my gratitude for the Republic of Korea’s (ROK) support following the Pahalgam attack and highlighted the need to fight terrorism in all its forms.”
The terrorist assault on April 22 in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam tragically claimed the lives of 26 tourists and left many more wounded. Four gunmen, two believed to be from Pakistan, emerged from the surrounding forests and opened fire indiscriminately on the unsuspecting victims.
South Korea had previously issued a strong condemnation of the attack, expressing deep concern over the bloodshed. A statement from the South Korean foreign ministry read, “The Republic of Korea strongly condemns the terrorist attack and reaffirms that terrorism can never be justified under any circumstances. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victims, their families, and the people of India.”
In response to the heinous act, India swiftly held a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting on April 23, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As part of its retaliation, India announced significant measures including:
- Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan
- Closure of the Attari border
- Cancellation of visas for Pakistani nationals
- Blocking Pakistani social media channels
- Further downgrading of diplomatic relations with Pakistan by reducing the embassy staff
These decisive steps underscore the severity of the attack and India’s resolve to protect its sovereignty and ensure regional security.
