In a significant step to strengthen bilateral relations, India’s External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met with St Kitts and Nevis Minister of Foreign Affairs, Denzil L Douglas, in New Delhi on April 7. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in development projects, healthcare partnerships, digital capacities, and disaster response preparedness. The dialogue also covered regional and global issues of mutual interest, highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership.
Douglas, who also serves as St Kitts and Nevis’ Minister for International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development, and Investment, arrived in New Delhi on Sunday after concluding official engagements in Chandigarh. During the visit, the High Commission of St Kitts and Nevis in India was inaugurated, marking a milestone in formalizing the diplomatic presence of the Caribbean nation in the country.
EAM Jaishankar described the meeting as “delightful” and emphasized the productive exchanges on regional and global challenges, while appreciating the mutual commitment to collaboration in critical sectors such as healthcare and disaster management. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that the visit symbolizes an important step toward broadening the historical ties and deepening cooperation between the two countries.
India and St Kitts and Nevis share friendly and cordial relations, reinforced by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in July 2007 to enhance Foreign Office Consultation mechanisms at the bureaucratic level. Being a Commonwealth nation, Indian nationals do not require a visa to enter St Kitts and Nevis, facilitating smoother travel and exchanges.
St Kitts and Nevis has consistently expressed support for India’s positions in international forums, reflecting the alignment of strategic interests between the two nations. The visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with Caribbean countries, while also promoting collaboration in areas of health, technology, and sustainable development.
With the inauguration of the High Commission and the continued ministerial-level engagements, India and St Kitts and Nevis are set to enhance trade, investment, and developmental cooperation, further consolidating their long-standing diplomatic and strategic relationship.
