External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on the sidelines of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Niagara, reaffirming India’s intent to rebuild and strengthen bilateral ties with Canada. The meeting came amid efforts from both sides to reestablish diplomatic warmth following months of strained relations.
In a post on X, Jaishankar congratulated Anand for successfully hosting the G7 foreign ministers’ conference and acknowledged the progress made under the New Roadmap 2025, a strategic plan aimed at expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. “I look forward to the further rebuilding of our bilateral partnership,” he shared, emphasizing a positive trajectory for India–Canada relations.
Anand also posted about the meeting, noting that the discussions centered around enhancing collaboration in trade, energy, security, and people-to-people ties. She reaffirmed that both countries share a mutual interest in boosting economic linkages and ensuring stability in their bilateral engagement.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that Jaishankar’s participation in the G7 meeting reflects India’s ongoing commitment to working closely with international partners to tackle global challenges while amplifying the voice of the Global South in global decision-making platforms.
The G7 meeting, hosted by Canada, brought together foreign ministers from major economies along with invited outreach nations, including Australia, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, and Ukraine. The discussions focused on key international concerns such as maritime security, energy resilience, economic cooperation, and access to critical minerals.
Jaishankar’s visit to Canada comes just a month after Anand’s trip to New Delhi, during which the two nations unveiled an ambitious framework to deepen engagement in areas like critical minerals, clean energy, and trade diversification. That visit marked the unveiling of the India–Canada Roadmap 2025, setting a foundation for future cooperation and mutual growth.
During their previous meeting, the ministers agreed to begin ministerial-level discussions on trade and investment at the earliest opportunity. The decision was motivated by the need to align with current global economic dynamics and each country’s strategic priorities.
The renewed dialogue between Jaishankar and Anand is seen as a constructive step toward normalizing India–Canada ties, signaling a shared willingness to move forward through cooperation, mutual respect, and shared economic aspirations.
