During an interactive session at Delhi University’s Hansraj College on Thursday, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored the strong bilateral relations between India and the United States, describing President Donald Trump as an “American nationalist.” In response to a question about whether Trump is a friend or adversary to India, Jaishankar emphasized the evolving landscape of global diplomacy and India’s approach to it.
Jaishankar shared that he attended Trump’s oath-taking ceremony and felt that India was treated positively. He noted that while Trump’s policies could bring notable changes to global affairs, India would continue to base its foreign policy on national interests. “Trump may introduce policies that differ from the norm, but we must navigate foreign policies in the best interests of our country,” Jaishankar remarked, adding that there would be areas of both agreement and difference between the two nations.
He also highlighted the strong personal connection between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump, reaffirming that the relationship between the US and India remains robust. Jaishankar spoke on India’s rising global stature, mentioning how even non-Indians are increasingly identifying with India, believing it might give them an advantage.
Reflecting on his own career, Jaishankar revealed that he never anticipated entering politics. He described his transition from academia and diplomacy to politics as an unexpected turn of events, largely influenced by Prime Minister Modi’s persuasion. He further noted that Indians abroad still rely on their homeland for support, emphasizing that they often turn to India for guidance and care.
