On September 12, 2023, Ms. Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, formally inaugurated the First Global Symposium on Farmers’ Rights in New Delhi. In her address, the President acknowledged the farming community as the world’s primary conservers and true guardians of crop diversity. She emphasized the remarkable power and responsibility bestowed upon farmers and urged recognition of their tireless efforts to protect and revive various plant species.
This significant symposium is hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome, facilitated through the International Treaty Secretariat on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (International Treaty). The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, and ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources are working together to plan and execute the event.
President Murmu highlighted India’s status as a mega-diverse nation, occupying just 2.4% of the world’s land area while harboring 7-8% of known plant and animal species. She underscored India’s position as one of the world’s most biodiverse nations, particularly in terms of plant and species diversity.
The President commended Indian farmers for their dedicated efforts in conserving local plant varieties, domesticating wild plants, and nurturing traditional crop variants. These actions have provided essential foundations for crop breeding programs, ensuring food and nutritional security for both humans and animals.
President Murmu noted significant increases in food grain production, horticulture, fisheries, milk, and egg production in India since 1950-51, significantly contributing to the nation’s food and nutrition security. She attributed these achievements to government support, combined with the relentless efforts of agro-biodiversity conservers, diligent farmers, scientists, and policymakers who have played pivotal roles in advancing numerous agricultural revolutions in the country.
