New Delhi witnessed the launch of India’s priorities for its 2026 BRICS chairship, under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability,” during the first meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas on February 9-10. The event, organized by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), was chaired by MEA Secretary for Economic Relations and India’s BRICS Sherpa, Sudhakar Dalela, along with Joint Secretary Shambhu L. Hakki, the BRICS Sous Sherpa.
Senior officials and Sherpas from BRICS nations and partner countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and UAE, participated actively. During the meeting, the delegates also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, sharing perspectives to advance the BRICS 2026 agenda.
Multiple Indian ministries and departments presented proposals for collaboration across key thematic areas such as health, agriculture, labour and employment, disaster risk management, environment, climate change, energy, ICT, security, counter-terrorism, and economic and financial development. Discussions also focused on strengthening the BRICS institutional framework, ensuring the grouping remains agile and forward-looking.
Reflecting India’s people-centric approach, the agenda included initiatives in sports, youth engagement, cultural programs, and academic forums. The BRICS Think Tank Council, Civil Forum, Business Council, and Women’s Business Alliance were highlighted as platforms for fostering inclusive growth and cooperation among member nations.
Delegates appreciated India’s theme and priorities, noting their alignment with previous BRICS chairships while reinforcing global collaboration for resilience, innovation, and sustainability. The delegates also explored India’s rich cultural heritage with visits to the National Crafts Museum, Hastakala Academy, and Akshardham Temple.
EAM Jaishankar praised the diverse suggestions brought forward by the BRICS delegations, emphasizing the forum’s significance as it marks 20 years of BRICS. Highlighting its role in international consultation and cooperation, he noted that the people-centric initiatives and innovative projects under India’s chairs aim to strengthen partnerships and deliver meaningful outcomes for member nations.
BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas will continue regular meetings throughout the year to coordinate efforts across thematic areas, ensuring that India’s 2026 chairship leaves a lasting impact on the global cooperative agenda.
