Team India concluded their Paris Olympics campaign with a total of six medals, including one silver and five bronze. The country dispatched 117 athletes to participate in various events at the prestigious games.
India secured the 71st spot on the medal tally, while the United States dominated with an impressive haul of 126 medals.
Manu Bhaker kicked off India’s medal haul by clinching a bronze in shooting, marking her as the first Indian woman to win an Olympic shooting medal. She further cemented her place in history by becoming the first Indian to win two medals at a single Olympics, as she and Sarabjot Singh earned a bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol event.
Swapnil Kusale also contributed to India’s medal count with a bronze in shooting. The Indian men’s hockey team matched their success from the Tokyo Olympics by securing a bronze medal in Paris 2024. Neeraj Chopra achieved notable success as well, earning a silver medal in the men’s javelin throw, thereby becoming India’s most successful individual Olympian.
Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat made headlines by becoming the youngest Olympic medallist for the country, winning bronze in wrestling.
Despite these achievements, the Paris 2024 Olympics brought more disappointments than celebrations for India. The nation narrowly missed out on six potential medals, with athletes finishing just shy of the podium in their respective events. Notable athletes such as Lakshya Sen, Mirabai Chanu, and Manu Bhaker were among those who fell short. Additionally, Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification before a historic final added to the nation’s dismay.
Indian competitors participated in 69 events across 16 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, boxing, equestrian, golf, hockey, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and tennis.
To date, India has won 41 Olympic medals. The country’s Olympic journey began with Norman Pritchard’s two silver medals in the 1900 Paris Games. KD Jadhav was the first independent Indian athlete to win an Olympic medal, earning bronze in wrestling at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to secure an Olympic medal with her weightlifting bronze in Sydney in 2000.
