World Bank President Ajay Banga lauded India’s growth rate as one of the most impressive in the global economy, attributing much of this progress to the strength of its domestic market. Speaking to reporters ahead of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund’s annual meeting, Banga remarked, “Achieving growth rates of six to seven percent in the current global environment reflects the successful measures India has implemented.”
He pointed out that a significant portion of this growth is fueled by domestic demand, which is a positive indicator. However, he also highlighted the need for India to focus on improving quality of life issues such as air and water quality. Banga indicated that the World Bank is actively collaborating with India on these issues and anticipates visible outcomes in upcoming projects.
Additionally, World Bank Managing Director for Operations, Anna Bjerde, emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting India in transforming this growth into job creation and sustainable development. She stressed the importance of increasing female workforce participation, noting that there is considerable potential to enhance women’s involvement in the economy.
Bjerde also mentioned that the World Bank is engaged in urban development initiatives to improve livability in cities, focusing on areas like air quality, water supply, and effective urban planning.
