Chile’s Ambassador to India, Juan Angulo, has underscored India’s growing importance on the global stage, stating that the country’s relative weight in international affairs continues to rise and plays a crucial role in shaping global agendas.
In an interaction in New Delhi, Ambassador Angulo highlighted India’s leadership during its G20 presidency, describing it as substantial and impactful. He noted that India’s initiatives aimed at strengthening the voice of the Global South have been significant, with Chile participating at the highest levels in meetings convened by New Delhi.
The envoy stressed that countries like India are essential intermediaries in addressing complex international challenges. As a rapidly growing nation from the Global South, India’s expanding diplomatic engagement and the increasing frequency of visits by global leaders reflect its enhanced standing in international decision-making forums, he said.
Angulo reaffirmed Chile’s support for India’s aspiration to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, emphasising the importance of multilateralism in resolving global issues. He called for reforms within the United Nations to ensure the institution better reflects present-day global realities rather than those shaped by circumstances of seven or eight decades ago.
Highlighting the need for accountability and effectiveness within multilateral institutions, the ambassador said a reformed United Nations system would be better equipped to address contemporary challenges related to peace, security, development, and global stability. He noted that for medium and smaller nations like Chile, a strong multilateral framework remains essential for maintaining international order.
Angulo also rejected the notion that the United Nations has become irrelevant amid ongoing global conflicts, stating that international organisations continue to play a vital role in preserving peace and prosperity worldwide. He added that while the global system faces pressures, sustained cooperation and reform remain the most effective path forward.
The ambassador further welcomed the deepening engagement between India and the European Union, pointing to upcoming high-level visits and progress toward trade agreements. He described India’s strengthening ties with major European economies, including Germany, as a positive development that enhances economic cooperation and global stability.
Concluding his remarks, Angulo said India’s leadership, diplomatic outreach, and commitment to multilateral dialogue position it as a key global actor whose influence will continue to grow in shaping the international agenda in the years ahead.
