India’s fisheries sector has recorded significant growth over the past decade, with total fish production increasing from 95.79 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 197.75 million tonnes in 2024-25. This remarkable expansion positions India as the world’s second-largest fish producer, contributing nearly 8% to global output. The sector has also become a key driver of inclusive economic development, generating around 74.66 million direct and indirect jobs since 2014-15, and supporting the livelihoods of nearly 30 million people, particularly in coastal and rural regions. Fisheries now contribute approximately 7.43% to India’s agricultural Gross Value Added (GVA), highlighting their growing structural importance within the economy.
Alongside production growth, India’s seafood exports have expanded significantly, reaching $6.71 billion in FY25. This growth has been largely driven by strong international demand for frozen shrimp in key markets such as the United States and China. Government policy support has been critical in fostering this transformation. The Union Budget 2026-27 allocated $296.78 million to the fisheries sector, including $271.87 million for targeted schemes aimed at boosting productivity, formalisation, and value-chain efficiency.
Flagship initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), along with fisheries-focused credit, insurance, and infrastructure programs, have supported modern aquaculture practices and strengthened the sector’s global competitiveness. These measures have helped improve operational efficiency, enhance export potential, and provide sustainable livelihoods for millions of people involved in the industry.
With continued investment and policy focus, India’s fisheries sector is poised for further expansion. The combination of rising production, employment generation, and growing exports underscores its role as a significant contributor to national economic growth. Looking ahead, the sector’s modernization, technological adoption, and strategic initiatives will strengthen India’s position as a global leader in fish production and seafood exports, supporting rural incomes and enhancing food security across the country.
